Surrey Commercial Docks. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Surrey Commercial Docks were mainly engaged in the softwood trade and a significant portion of the American trade, particularly wheat and dairy produce. An immense number of lighters operated there, mainly handling timber, the sorting, piling, marking and storage of which was the Set of four folding lithographed maps, laid on linen, comprising: 1 Plan of the Surrey Commercial Docks, May, 1905, 46 x 35 cm, after James S. There was a managed closure of the dock system west of Tilbury and between the early 1970s and 1980s, the Surrey Commercial, India & Millwall Docks and the Royal Docks all closed down. 1810, it was also being used for timber (Deal porters stacked the softwood imports) and corn, becoming part of the Commercial Docks, and some years later was taken over the Surrey Commercial Dock Company as part of a network of docks in Rotherhithe. They tried to build a canal to Portsmouth, but only got as far as Peckham. The book is divided according to photos taken in the Pool of London and various docks, including the West India, Surrey Commercial and Tilbury, but the majority are in the Royal Docks. Presumably any vessels in the St Katharine, London or Millwall Docks were the ‘60s too insignificant to be photographed or to warrant inclusion. The 1872 strike was the beginning of trade union protection for the poorest dock workers like the lumpers, leading to companies employing more permanent staff and setting the stage for the biggest dock strike in history seventeen years later in 1889.
